Pitfalls of Software Metrics

Presented by:
Karen E. Mackey
Quality Systems Staff Engineer, Cisco Systems

Abstract

No matter what role you play in the software industry, you've undoubtedly had to contend with software measurements of some sort: you may have to count your lines of code or estimate how long your effort or team's effort will take, count your defects or establish measurable goals for process improvement efforts. Measuring software can be a huge challenge. We can't even see it, much less whip out a ruler and measure it. There can be all sorts of pitfalls and "gotchas" around software metrics from unintended consequences to misleading results, from missed key measurements to disbelieved results. In this SPIN meeting, Karen Mackey will make a presentation on the various pitfalls that surround software metrics and lead a discussion on the topic. Feel free to bring your software metrics stories with you to share.
